BREAD

BREAD, first night austin, austin, TX (2005)

Creator/Director/Performer

A performative happening and community ritual for the solar New Year. In the early morning hours of New Year’s Eve 2006, two-thousand and six freshly baked, round loaves of bread were randomly delivered to 2006 doorsteps of Austin residents throughout the city. Each loaf contained a secret message and an invitation to participate in the First Night Austin Grand Processional parade downtown and in a tashlich (casting of breadcrumbs) ritual on the Ladybird Lake. Several hundred community members gathered to march and cast.

Commissioned by First Night Austin.

Winner of the First Night International Creative Programming Award, Dublin, Ireland.
